In Portland as it is in Heaven

Thank you for your interest in joining Sojourn Church for the summer as we seek to follow the way of Jesus together in Portland!

This page was created to give you some details regarding your time in Portland and how you can prepare. You should also spend some time exploring our website as it has a lot of information about Sojourn and the types of activities we are involved in here. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

We are very glad that the Lord is stirring an interest in you to Sojourn this summer and are excited to possibly work with you!

What You Will Be Doing

You will be in a Gospel Community/Table. At Sojourn, Gospel Communities and Tables are the heartbeat of our church. This is our small group, house-church communities. You will be expected to not only attend, but participate and contribute to the Gospel Community and Table. You will receive discipleship and accountability as well as help engage the Kingdom through Gospel Communities and Tables and will probably find it to be your favorite night of the week.

You will be leading and serving our Summer Mission TeamsWe have 2-4 teams of people coming to serve in Portland with Sojourn. You will function as a facilitator, tour guide and liaison for those groups once they arrive. You will help lead them in prayer walks, in outreach, and other service opportunities. Sojourn staff will look to you to be servant leaders for these groups by not only getting them from point A to point B, but also serving with them in these experiences. We know you will do a great job and greatly enhance these groups time in the city!

You will join us on Sunday mornings at the Gathering in Alberta Arts District. This is our Sunday morning service where we all come together to celebrate what God has done in our lives throughout the week. You will have a role in that gathering. You can choose what that role will be, but some options might be: welcome/greet people as they enter, run our slides, lead in worship, helping with kids discipleship, or helping to run sound. All of our summer missionaries will also assist with set up and tear down before and after the gathering.

You will receive training, equipping and coaching. One of our goals is that you leave more prepared as a missionary than when you first arrive. Part of that process will involve classroom/forum type of training with practitioners in the Portland metro context. We will also read through a few books together and discuss them as a team.

You will be serving one of our local partners by building on the relationship we have built with them and growing our partnership and/or cultivating a new one.

You will be jumping in and helping where needed. During times that we do not have a mission team, you will be assisting the Sojourn body with whatever they may need.

You will have one day off a week to Sabbath, relax, and explore the city.

The most important thing about ministry is to be flexible and let the Spirit lead each day!
